چکیده

Using a new technique we have determined a value for the constant of proportionality between submillimetre (submm) emission and dust mass, the dust mass absorption coefficient (κd) at 850μm. Our method has an advantage over previous methods in that we avoid assumptions about the properties of dust in the interstellar medium. Our only assumption is that the fraction of metals incorporated in the dust (ε) in galaxies is a universal constant. To implement our method we require objects that have submillimetre and far-infrared (FIR) flux measurements as well as gas mass and metallicity estimates. We present data for all the galaxies with suitable measurements, including new submm maps for five galaxies. We find κ850 = 0.07± 0.02m kg. We have also been able to use our sample to investigate our assumption that ε is a universal constant. We find no evidence that ε is different for dwarf and giant galaxies and show that the scatter in ε from galaxy to galaxy is apparently quite small.

Millimetric properties of gamma ray burst host galaxies

We present millimetre (mm) and submillimetre (submm) photometry of a sample of five host galaxies of Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs), obtained using the MAMBO2 and SCUBA bolometer arrays respectively. These observations were obtained as part of an ongoing project to investigate the status of GRBs as indicators of star formation. Our targets include two of the most unusual GRB host galaxies, selected as...

The SCUBA Local Universe Galaxy Survey (SLUGS) is the first systematic survey of the local universe at submm wavelengths. At 850μm, SCUBA is sensitive to thermal emission from dust at ∼ 10 K and should therefore trace the bulk dust mass, unlike IRAS which was only sensitive to warmer dust (> 30 K) near star-forming regions. So far, we have imaged ∼ 200 objects selected from the IRAS Bright Gala...

Constraining the Radio - Submillimetre Redshift Indicator using data from the SCUBA Local Universe Galaxy

Many of the faint submm sources uncovered by deep SCUBA surveys still remain unidentified at most, if not all other wavelengths. The most successful method so far of obtaining accurate positions and hence allowing more secure identifications has been to use centimetre wavelength imaging with the VLA. This has led to a tempting approach for obtaining redshift estimates for this population (Caril...

Submillimetre observations of luminous z > 4 radio - quiet quasars and the contribution of AGN to the submm source population

We present sensitive 850μm SCUBA photometry of a statistically-complete sample of six of the most luminous (MB < −27.5; νLν(1450 Å) >∼ 10 13 L⊙), z > 4 radio-quiet quasars, reaching noise levels (1σ ∼ 1.5mJy) comparable with the deep blank sky surveys. These observations probe the rest frame far infrared region (∼150μm), at luminosity levels for thermal sources comparable with those that IRAS p...
